HELLO!
I'M AMMIE GOMEZ
I am a surface designer and illustrator with a background in graphic design based in California. I design fabric, wallpaper, greeting cards, stationary goods, and more.
From the moment I could hold a pencil, I found joy in putting my imagination onto paper. Drawing was a big part of my childhood, for career day other kids were nurses, firefighters but I wanted to be an artist. I think early on I knew I would be doing something creative with my life. Fast forward to today and I'm living out my childhood dream as a surface designer.
My artwork is inspired by nature, trips to the zoo and my own life experiences. I would describe my art as whimsical and playful. I use a combination of Photoshop, Illustrator and Procreate.
MY STORY
I started out as graphic designer and worked in the industry for a few years creating marketing material and designs for products. One day while browsing Pinterest for inspiration I stumbled upon many beautiful patterns and the word "Surface Design". I then learned that people created patterns for a living and had their artwork on various products in stores. I thought that sounded like so much fun so I began learning how to create my first repeat pattern on my spare time. I later discovered Spoonflower and decided to enter in one of their design challenges. A week later I find out that my design placed in the top 50 and thats the moment I knew I wanted to become a surface designer.
I left my job and decided to go back to school to give myself the time to learn everything I could about becoming surface designer. Most of it was self taught and from free resources I found online by other amazing designers. Not many people know what surface design is but I love how this small community of artist's have been so welcoming and supportive of each other. As I've continued on this journey, it has truly been wonderful in every aspect. With each new pattern, I feel a spark of my creativity brought to life.
TEACHING
When I'm not creating, I am teaching at a high school digital illustration on Adobe Photoshop. The best thing about being a teacher is seeing what student's create and their process behind it. I am honored to be able to inspire the next generation of artists as they explore their own talents and develop their skills. I provide a supportive and encouraging environment in the classroom which allows students to express themselves freely and explore their creativity without limitations. I enjoy spending time with my students; it's a wonderful way to take a break from my own work and invest some of my time in their growth and development.
Below is some of my student's artwork grades 9th-12th.
